Charlotte Hornets President of Basketball Operations Mitch Kupchak walked away from the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery with the 11th overall pick, but looked extremely out of place, now in his new job after a year sabbatical following his dismissal from the Los Angeles Lakers.

“This was the first lottery and, I hope, the last lottery that I ever attend,” Kupchak said right after the draft, according to Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer.

Kupchak, who has been in a long-storied reign at the top of the Lakers, is not accustomed to attending these lotteries, given that he's led many playoff teams to the ultimate success during his time as an executive.

The Hornets had very slim chances to land in the top three of the draft, but were ultimately wound up with the same selection as last year.

“A little bummed out,” Kupchak described of his immediate reaction. “A 2.9 percent chance (the odds in the weighted lottery of the Hornets making the top 3) isn’t much of a chance, but you’ve still got a chance.”

Charlotte drafted Kentucky shooting guard Malik Monk with that same pick last year. This time, they are in line to select prospects like Robert Williams (Texas A&M), Kevin Knox and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Kentucky), or either of the Bridges in Mikal and Miles (hovering between 10th and 11th in the current mock draft).

The Hornets will also need to shed a lot of salary in hopes of retaining All-Star point guard Kemba Walker, leaving Kupchak with plenty of work to do in the offseason before he can hope not to return to the next lottery.
