Like all rookies in the NBA, Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball will be mentored by a veteran throughout the season. One might expect that Ball's mentor will be a big name like Gordon Hayward.

However, that isn't the case. Big man Bismack Biyombo has taken Ball under his wing, and so far, the relationship has been stellar.

Hornets head coach James Borrego observed how the relationship between Ball and Biyombo has been developing. Borrego has seen the two talking in practice and communicating well during their preseason games.

“I love what I’m seeing, the partnership there, the mentorship,” the Hornets coach said, per Jacob Rude of USA Today. “That’s huge for LaMelo, his growth, but he’s very engaging. He wants it. He loves that connection with his teammates, with his coaches. Obviously, (Biyombo) is one of those guys that’s willing to embrace that role and mentor a young player like this. It’s a great relationship. I get a kick watching them from afar.”

While Bismack Biyombo seems like the unlikely mentor, he actually took Malik Monk under his wing last season. He likes the fact that rookies are very good listeners. With LaMelo Ball, Biyombo is impressed with the kid's curiosity.

“I think it’s just being able to help him because I came in at the age he is and he’s a very good listener,” Biyombo said of the Hornets' top rookie. “He asks a lot of questions. (The rookies are) good listeners. They listen. The only thing we can do is try to get better each and every game as a team and they’re helping me, as well, to get better. It’s a family and we continue to grow.”

From the looks of it, the Hornets are off to a good start. Not only do they have Ball, who people believe is the best player in his class, but they also have Biyombo guiding the young gun as he adjusts to the NBA style of play.
