The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Boston Bruins 5-1 in Game 1 of their first-round eastern conference playoff series. The Bruins enter Game 2 in need of a better showing, as the Hurricanes are looking to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

Midway through the first period, the Bruins found themselves on the power play for the second time in a scoreless game. Bruins superstar forward David Pastrnak came barreling down the ice and collided with Hurricanes goalie Antti Raanta. Raanta was sent sprawling to the ice, and a bunch of Carolina players took exception, pushing and shoving Pastrnak.

Upon review, Pastrnak was only given a 2-minute minor penalty, nullifying Boston's own power play. However, when you watch all of the angles of the play, it appeared as though the Bruins forward punched or at least put his arms out to engage the Hurricanes goalie.

Raanta fell to the ice and flipped his helmet off. As he stood up, you could see blood dripping from his mouth. He would head to the locker room and the Hurricanes had to insert third-string goalie Pyotr Kochetkov.

Carolina is already without their number one goaltender in Frederik Andersen. Andersen was injured late in the regular season and had already been ruled out for at least the first two games.

Pyotr Kochetkov is a rookie who only made three appearances for Carolina this season.

The incident appeared to energize the crowd and the Hurricanes. They would then score two goals over the next few minutes, and lead 2-0 late in the first period.
