The 2021-22 UEFA Nations League campaign has officially arrived and Saturday brings a tantalizing clash in Italy vs Germany on matchday 1 in Bologna. The Azzurri, who won Euro 2020 last summer, were absolutely dominated earlier in the week in the Finalissima against Argentina, suffering a 3-0 defeat. To make matters worse, Italy is also absent from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after losing in the play-off to North Macedonia.

As for the Germans, they lost to England in the Round of 16 at the Euros but they cruised through World Cup qualifying with ease. Hansi Flick's men are currently enjoying a nine-game unbeaten run, but their opponents haven't exactly been top-tier. This Nations League group for Italy and Germany is by no means an easy one, with England and Hungary joining the European heavyweights in Group A3.

Italy vs Germany preview & predictions

The Italians have clearly lost a step since their triumph in the summer of 2021 at Wembley, beating the Three Lions in penalties. Many even wanted to see boss Roberto Mancini sacked following their World Cup Qualifying collapse, but the Azzurri have decided to stick with him for the time being. Although Italy doesn't have much to play for in the foreseeable future, they will see the Nations League as a clear opportunity to prove themselves again. However, the side just lost a massive piece for good as Giorgio Chiellini bid farewell to the national team after Wednesday's loss to Argentina as he heads to LAFC to begin a new chapter.

Germany is looking very solid lately, despite faltering at Euro 2020. With a new manager in Flick, who took over after Joachim Low finally gave up his duties with the country, the Germans are poised to make a run in Qatar alongside Spain, Japan, and a TBA Concacaf or Oceania team. Die Mannschaft hasn't played since March 29th, drawing with Netherlands 1-1. Prior to that, Germany captured eight victories in a row, with seven coming in WCQ. That being said, most of these sides were poor, which means Italy should be a good test for them. This entire pod in the Nations League as a whole should get them in tip-top shape for Qatar.

Italy has a few notable absences here, with Ciro Immobile, Federico Chiesa, Nicolo Zaniolo, and Marco Verratti still nursing injuries, which resulted in a much different starting XI in London against Argentina. Lorenzo Insigne returns to the attack though, which is huge. Germany meanwhile, is at essentially full strength. Youngster Karim Adeyemi will be hoping to earn a start ahead of Timo Werner, while the likes of Kai Havertz, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, and LeRoy Sane should see minutes, whether it be as a starter or substitute.

The most recent encounter between Italy and Germany ended in a scoreless stalemate. However, the visitors are just simply playing better football in recent months. Their quality will shine through in a matchday 1 victory.
