The Jacksonville Jaguars have plenty of pondering to do regarding quarterback Blake Bortles. After a disappointing end to a stellar 2017 NFL season, there is speculation as to whether or not the Jaguars are going to stick with Bortles as their franchise quarterback beyond next year.

Regardless, Jacksonville is still going to take every precaution they can after it was revealed that Bortles underwent surgery on his right wrist, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

Jaguars’ QB Blake Bortles underwent right wrist surgery Friday for a condition that kept him on the injury report all season, sources told ESPN. Bortles dealt with the issue since December 2016. The Jaguars elected to avoid surgery last offseason, but knew it was needed now.

Bortles played through the pain and even managed to enjoy perhaps his most efficient season. He threw for 3,687 yards, 21 touchdowns, and a career-low 13 interceptions this year. More importantly, he was able to lead the Jaguars to their first conference championship since 1999. But despite the tremendous strides Bortles made this season, there are still doubts surrounding him as the right man for the job.

During the regular season, the Jaguars announced their decision to pick up Bortles' fifth-year option for next year. This means that despite the injury, he will be guaranteed to make $19 million for the final year of his contract if he is still on the roster by mid-March.

There is no telling whether the recent surgery will carry some significance into Jacksonville's decision-making process, especially since it was performed on his throwing arm. That said, the Jaguars' success means they can longer take a wait-and-see approach with the former third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
