The Urban Meyer era has unceremoniously come to an end in Jacksonville. The Jaguars sacked their head coach without even finishing the season, finishing a saga that had much more twists and turns than anyone could have predicted.

But coming into the season, there was at least some hope that Urban Meyer could be the man to turn things around for the despondent Jaguars franchise.

Meyer garnered massive success at the college level while being known for riding both his players and coaching staff hard to squeeze out the best from them. The Jaguars didn't reap the same success in Jacksonville.

Shortly after the firing, Meyer was asked about whether his style of coaching could truly be effective in today's NFL. The former Jaguars coach pointed to the changing times as part of the reason for falling short.

Via NFL insider Ian Rapoport:

“Just society has changed,” said Meyer after the Jaguars let him go. “You think how hard you pushed. … I believe there is greatness in everybody and it's the coach's job to find that greatness however you do that. Positive encouragement. Pushing them to be greater, making them work harder, identifying flaws and trying to fix [them]. I think everything is so fragile right now. And that includes coaching staffs. When I got into coaching, coaches weren't making this kind of money and they didn't have agents. Everything is so fragile where it used to be team, team, team.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars have pulled the plug on Urban Meyer. Hopefully attention could stay on the field next season, and for the right reasons.
