It was an unfortunate Sunday for New York Jets quarterback Josh McCown in Week 14. Just a week after head coach Todd Bowles had announced McCown would start the rest of the 2017 NFL season, he suffered a broken hand against the Denver Broncos.

The Jets are now 5-8 on the year and are undoubtedly in the midst of a rebuild. Needless to say, the 38-year-old seemingly acknowledged that he may have taken his last snaps not only with the Jets, but as an NFL quarterback.

By way of Bob Glauber of Newsday:

“You never know,” McCown said. “You get flooded with emotions of all those things, because you don’t know. It’s a family decision every year. I don’t know what’s next. The possibility of something coming to an end, you just don’t know. So yeah, it’s just emotional, because I love these guys so much, love these coaches and love this organization. It means a lot to me to be here. … Just the scope of each year, not wanting to finish this way, and obviously, when you come to this point in your career, each year is so special and precious. You don’t want it to end this way. You’re thinking through everything, thinking through the game, just thinking through everything. Thinking through 16 years. It’s just emotional. I’m very, very thankful. I hate that it went this way, but I’m just so thankful that I got to be a part of this.”

Although the injury could not be more unfortunate, McCown at least got to enjoy his last snaps as a starting quarterback. Not to mention he is coming off arguably the best performance of his 15-year career in which he was awarded AFC Player of the Week after throwing for 331 yards and totaling three touchdowns. That said, it has been a roller-coaster of events for McCown.

Fortunately, his solid play down the stretch certainly merits another potential offer as a backup. However, it remains to be seen whether or not McCown is ready to join the eighth team of his career coming off injury.
