Journeyman quarterback Josh McCown has had a lot of ups and downs throughout his 15-year NFL career, but his run in the gridiron may soon be coming to an end.

Former NFL scouting director Mike McCartney send out a tweet quoting 39-year-old's thoughts on leaving the professional football stage:

Although he was never as prolific as his QB counterparts, McCown was often regarded as one of the more reliable backup quarterbacks in the league. When given the opportunity to start, however, he made this most out of it.

McCown has played for eight different NFL teams with 99 games under his belt and 76 of them were as a starter. What comes as a bit peculiar about his career is that his best season came late into his NFL run, with his first season as a Jet being his best outing to date.

During the 2017 season, McCown finished with career-highs of 267 completions for 2,926 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and a 67.3-percent completion rate. The Texas native also displayed some of his best footwork that year with 37 rushing attempts for 12 yards and five more TDs despite being 37 years old at the time.

The Jets could certainly move on from McCown if he does indeed intend to retire. Although, the development of their 2018 first-round pick, Sam Darnold, might encounter a sophomore slump without McCown as his mentor on the sidelines.

Darnold's rookie campaign concluded with quite a whimper, showing that he has much left to prove. The USC standout threw for just 2,865 passing yards along with 17 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a mediocre 57.7-percent completion rate.
