New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson has been solid over his first three seasons in the NFL, but he is yet to take that next step. This coming season, with the Jets hoping to contend for a playoff spot, Anderson may have to emerge as a true No. 1 wideout.

Well, Anderson seems to be up for the challenge and then some:

“That was a down year for me,” Anderson said of 2018, according to Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News. “I know my capabilities. I know what I want to become … and that’s the best receiver in the NFL.”

Anderson played in 14 games this past season, hauling in 50 receptions for 752 yards and six touchdowns.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Temple University, went undrafted but ended up landing with the Jets in 2016. That ensuing season, he went on to appear in all 16 contests while catching 42 passes for 587 yards and a couple of scores.

Anderson then had a breakout year of sorts in 2017, snaring 63 balls for 941 yards and seven touchdowns.

Still, Anderson is yet to prove that he can be a No. 1 receiver, and on a roster where he is almost certainly the most talented wide out, he may have to do just that going into 2019.

“We’re just going to keep trying to think of ways to get him the ball, ways to create variety in his routes,” said Jets head coach Adam Gase. “Instead of just doing one or two things, maybe we can open that thing up to five, six, seven things to where he’s a threat on multiple levels whether it be underneath, intermediate or down the field.”

New York won just four games in 2018.
