New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold spent some time playing with the first team for the first time during Tuesday’s OTAs. But head coach Todd Bowles doesn’t want anyone to make a big deal about this development as he said that “It's nothing to read into.”

“He's been progressing,” Bowles said of Darnold per Rich Cimini of ESPN. “Obviously, he's seeing things on both sides of the ball for the first time. As the days go by, he's getting more comfortable. He has to keep working at it and getting better.”

Darnold got eight reps with the starters and 20 total on Tuesday. He completed 4 of 5 passes, with the lone incompletion due to a receiver drop. Veteran Josh McCown had 14 reps with the first team, while Teddy Bridgewater had 14 exclusively with the backups.

The Jets’ starting quarterback situation is currently a hard one to read. Bowles says all three are “good quarterbacks that we can play with.” While Darnold is clearly the team’s quarterback of the future, Bridgewater has performed well during OTAs while McCown is obviously the most experienced of the three.

Darnold should still have a chance to win the starting job if he performs well enough this offseason and into preseason. But there are still a lot of moving parts that are subject to change, from the performance of all three to the presence of Bridgewater or McCown, who could very well be traded.

But at least the Jets actually have multiple good options at quarterback, which has not happened in quite a long while.
