Since the New York Jets made the selection of USC's Sam Darnold with the third overall pick in this year's draft, the team has been quite ecstatic about bringing aboard a promising talent at the quarterback position. It has put in place the next potential long-term solution under center that the franchise has been searching for quite some time.

Following the first day of rookie minicamp on Friday morning, Jets head coach Todd Bowles playful exuded that high level of excitement regarding what he saw on the practice field from the 20-year-old in his first time officially throwing as a member of the team.

“He was great! I want him to play right now!”

Although this a bit of a sarcastic remark from Bowles, it does show that the team has already become quite impressed by what Darnold has shown this early in rookie minicamp. This exemplifies another reason why he was widely regarded as being the top quarterback in this year's draft behind what he has demonstrated throughout his brief collegiate career.

It is still quite early in the process, but it does signify that the team could be serious about making him the starter in training camp if he is able to show enough to take on the responsibility. He clearly has the talent to become a franchise quarterback, it may just come down to when the Jets believe it will be time to hand him the reigns of the offense.

In line with that thought process, general manager Mike Maccagnan has acknowledged that Darnold will have every chance to get a shot at being the starter ahead of the 2018 campaign. There is no timetable on when that will be the appropriate move to make, but if he continues to rub of the coaching staff in this manner it won't be long before the Jets make that decision concerning the quarterback position.
