Rookie tackle Mekhi Becton is a different breed. The 11th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft appears poised to be a cornerstone for the New York Jets' offense, and he is showing early signs of potential for his team.

In fact, Jets head coach Adam Gase has been more than thrilled with the way Becton has performed in training camp so far.

When asked if his prized rookie is struggling to adapt as the Jets begin their training camp, Gase said that he has been nothing but impressed with Becton.

“No, not even close. It’s funny, he looks like he’s been doing this for a minute,” the Jets coach said, per The New York Post. “It looks very natural for him. I’m like you guys, anytime a rookie gets plugged into that starting offensive line, we all know it’s a lot, and especially going against the defense, our defense every day you’re getting a lot of different looks. He looks comfortable to me. And he’s not making mistakes. I’ve been extremely impressed by how he’s operating as far as his knowledge of football, how he’s retaining things, acquiring the information, recalling it, and then at the same time executing, playing fast. He’s doing a really good job.”

The 360-pound offensive tackle was a beast in his three years in his three years in Louisville, where he was the starting tackle in his last two seasons for the Cardinals. In his junior year in 2019, he received first team All-ACC honors and was also awarded the Jacobs Blocking Award.

Mekhi Becton has proven so far in his young career that he can be an imposing force on the offensive line. Moreover, as Adam Gase noted, the young Virginia native has also been a quick learner — something that he wants from his young Jets players as they develop to capable NFL pros.
