As it turns out, Morris Claiborne is going to stay in New York. According to a report by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the cornerback has agreed to a short-term deal with the New York Jets, who must be happy that no other team was able to snatch Claiborne off the free agent market.

Morris Claiborne was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft and played for Jerry Jones’ team until 2016. He would later sign a one-year, $3 million deal with the Jets in March of 2016.

Prior to his re-signing with the Jets, Claiborne was reported to be being eyed by several teams, but did not get any significant traction once the free agency period kicked in. This gave the Jets an opportunity for them to ink Claiborne to what seems to be a cheaper deal than what they would have struck up with the 28-year-old LSU product had they not waited for free agency.

Claiborne played 15 games last season and recorded 34 tackles and an interception, as part of the Jets’ defense that allowed 234.3 passing yards per game. He comes back to a new-look Jets secondary that now has cornerback Trumaine Johnson, who was signed by the Jets on Tuesday.

Claiborne, Johnson, and the safety tandem of Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye form one of the best secondaries in the NFL today.
