With the NFL offseason nearly in full swing, the Kirk Cousins Sweepstakes is set to officially begin. The New York Jets are among the teams listed as finalists for his services.

However, it seems the Jets are not approaching the situation without a contingency plan. According to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown will serve as a fallback in case they do not sign Cousins:

So Plan A at quarterback is Cousins. Plan B could be a Bridgewater/McCown tandem, as SNY reported on Sunday. It does not appear that the Jets have much interest (yet) in Case Keenum or Sam Bradford, which means Plan C is probably a pairing of McCown, and whoever they can get with the sixth pick in the draft.

It does not sound like they are initially in love with any of the top four quarterbacks, though. That could change, but none of them figure to be the Jets' starter on Opening Day next season.

Cousins is the biggest name set to hit the market and many other moves throughout the league are largely predicated on where he decides to go. He has made it clear that his intention is to compete for a championship right away. Which is why it came as a bit of a surprise to hear that the Jets were still in the running despite their lackluster campaign in 2017. However, they have made it clear that they are willing to offer Cousins the most lucrative contract of any other team.

That said, it is still wise to assume that he could choose to go to a more formidable opponent like the Minnesota Vikings. As a result, the Jets are looking to get something in return from the Vikings should they sign Cousins away. Bridgewater makes for a solid option under center after establishing himself as one of the most promising quarterbacks in the league early on in his career. However, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be able to come back strong from a devastating knee injury that kept him out for nearly two whole seasons.

Meanwhile, McCown serves as the safest option after a solid year with the Jets last season. He had even been awarded Player of the Week honors down the final stretch of the year. That said, New York could ultimately cut their losses by signing McCown and developing whichever quarterback they take with the sixth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
