Jamal Adams is interested in being traded by the New York Jets, but his asking price for an extension could complicate the situation. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Adams could be seeking a deal upwards of $20 million annually.

While some positions on defense have seen a massive boost in the market, there aren't many safeties getting paid an excess of $10 million annually. Furthermore, there are only six safeties heading into next season set to make $10 or more million in base salary.

Back in January, Eddie Jackson of the Chicago Bears signed a four-year, $58.4 million extension. Even though the deal doesn't kick in until 2021, Jackson is now the highest-paid safety in the NFL in terms of average salary.

Some would think that Adams' asking price would come in slightly above what Jackson garnered from Chicago. However, the Jets All-Pro safety wants to be paid as one of the marquee defensive players in the NFL. That could make him too expensive for certain teams to acquire via trade.

Currently, there are seven defensive players that are slated to carry a cap hit of $20 million or more in 2020. None of them are of the safety variety. The most notable defensive players getting paid lucratively are Aaron Donald, Khalil Mack and Von Miller.

In his first three seasons with the Jets, Adams has unquestionably solidified himself as arguably the best safety in the NFL. The former No. 6-overall pick has combined for 273 tackles, 12 sacks and six forced fumbles.

In addition to that, Adams has recorded 25 pass breakups and two interceptions since his rookie season in 2017. As valuable as Adams has been, it is unclear if a team values him at over $20 million annually. As a result, his request to be traded could have some complications.
