Back in February, the Los Angeles Lakers made the decision to name Magic Johnson the team president of basketball operations.

It has immediately put him at the helm of control for the future of the roster. During a recent interview with Tania Ganguli of the LA Times, Jerry Buss‘ oldest son, Johnny Buss aired his past fears of Johnson overspending in order to build a championship contender.

Johnny maintains that his intention was never to usurp his sister’s authority. He says he worried that Johnson would spend too much in pursuit of a championship. He says he and his brother were aiming for a majority on the board to get control of the budget, but insists he did not know about the effort to elect a board without Jeanie.

This fear concerning Johnson could have stemmed from his continuous public outpour of change when Jim Buss held the position he now holds. It could have easily been interpreted as him being a free-flowing spender with his eyes toward fixing the Lakers.

Johnson hasn't exactly fueled that speculation as he has stated that he is waiting until next offseason to spend in free agency. There is clearly a grander plan in place for the new management that may hinge the young core playing a big part of the process.

However, if Johnson is able to build a team that makes significant strides toward being a championship contender, the spending could take a major uptick. Ultimately, the Lakers have proven over their well-decorated history that they aren't afraid to spend money when an NBA title is in play.
