G League star Trey Burke has agreed to a deal with the New York Knicks. Burke, who played this season for the Knicks' G League affiliate team, the Westchester Knicks, had been targeted by New York's front office for some time.

The deal was first reported by Yahoo! Sports' Shams Charania:

The 27-year-old point guard had already signed with the Knicks before the start of the season but was waived just three days later. While playing for the Knicks G League affiliate, Burke averaged 26.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and two steals while shooting 48.9 percent from the field and 41.8 from 3-point land in 37 minutes per game.

Out of the University of Michigan, Burke was drafted with the 9th overall pick in the 2013 Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was immediately traded to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng. He played three seasons with the Jazz, becoming a regular starter for them during his rookie year. Burke was sent to the bench in his second season and saw an, even more reduced role in his third. He was traded away to the Washington Wizards for a 2021 second-round pick and played for them during 2016-17. Burke played even less in Washington, and the team did not re-sign him after his contract expired.

Burke has career averages of 10.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists on 39 percent shooting from the field and 33.7 percent from deep range, with 1.4 turnovers in 24.8 minutes a game.

With the addition of Burke, the team needs to clear a spot inside the 15-man roster limit. Little used veteran Ramon Sessions is expected to be waived soon, before Burke's contract is officially announced by the team. Burke, a 6-foot-1 scoring specialist, will join veteran Jarret Jack and rookie Frank Ntilikina in head coach Jeff Hornacek's point guard rotation provided much-needed scoring abilities. It will be interesting to see how will Hornacek distribute the minutes with the return of Tim Hardaway Jr. to the lineup.
