Kemba Walker's homecoming to the New York Knicks has gone poorly for everyone. The kid from the Bronx has struggled mightily this season and has agreed to be sidelined for the remainder of the season. It was his decision to make and the team supported it. His production is way down and his time in his home city may be up.

Since the Knicks didn't trade Walker or buy him out of his contract, questions arose on why the team chose this course. According to SNY's Ian Begley, New York is looking to trade Walker this offseason, where his trade value will be more solidified.

It’s worth noting that the Knicks didn’t aggressively pursue trades involving Walker ahead of the deadline. One way to interpret this? New York decided Walker would have more trade value in the offseason, when he will be on an expiring contract.

Walker will be on an expiring contract worth $9 million after this season. Since it's a relatively meager deal and Walker has been known as a great teammate, it should be an easily movable deal. In limited minutes off the bench, Walker can be a decent option on a team with solid depth. Still, his days as a key contributor to any team seem to be done.

The Knicks and Walker are not totally on the outs. Their relationship seems to be a respectful one even though he has played poorly this season. Knicks president Leon Rose said that Walker's long-term success is a priority.
