The New York Knicks have been eyeing NBA Draft prospect R.J. Hampton, who skipped college to play in New Zealand. The 6-foot-5 point guard is under consideration by the front office if the Knicks select between sixth and 10th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Knicks have struggled to find a suitable point guard in their lineup, trying a myriad of things with Phil Jackson product Frank Ntilikina, to no avail. The trade for Dennis Smith Jr. has not panned out at all, rendering offseason signing Elfrid Payton as their most reliable option.

The draft, which is scheduled for June 25, but greatly expected to be postponed unless the NBA season is canceled, could have Hampton as an under-the-radar candidate due to playing overseas, according to Marc Berman of The New York Post.

The speedy 19-year-old Dallas native was a trailblazer of sorts after ditching the college ranks and betting on himself to get paid right after high school. His season was cut short due to a hip injury, which makes him a risky take in the top-10 of the board.

The Knicks have whiffed plenty in June, as some of their latest first-round selections have yet to concretize as potential stars. Kevin Knox and RJ Barrett — their two lottery picks in the last two years — appear much greener than the Knicks thought at first, still works in progress for a franchise in need of a change of direction.

The Knicks could take their shot with the young Hampton, but striking out with a third-straight whiff in the draft could be a tough look for new president Leon Rose and general manager Scott Perry, who was kept on board to help with the draft.
