Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis will undergo an MRI on his right thumb on Monday after suffering an apparent sprain during Saturday's preseason contest against the Brooklyn Nets:

Davis was supposed to undergo an MRI on Sunday, but the Lakers will wait another day to obtain those results. Davis had his thumb wrapped prior to the start of the contest, but he tweaked it going for a block attempt in the first quarter.

There is optimism that the injury is not serious after initial exams showed no ligament damage. However, the Lakers can ill afford uncertainty with respect to their star forward.

The Lakers were one of the teams speculated to be in the Davis sweepstakes at the February trade deadline. Instead, they ended up acquiring him this summer after general manager Rob Pelinka sent Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart to the Pelicans.

Prior to a series of injuries and what essentially amounted to a holdout, Davis was arguably the leading candidate for the NBA MVP Award.

Davis averaged 28.1 points, 12.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists before the All-Star break, and he led all players in PER and win shares over the course of the first few months.

The Lakers cleaned house in order to acquire Davis and give LeBron James a second star. Given that Los Angeles has already lost DeMarcus Cousins for the season, however, any lengthy injury to Davis would be a massive blow to their title hopes.

Stay tuned for updates on Davis' status on Monday.
