The family of the late Los Angeles Lakers icon in Kobe Bryant wanted to secure the names ‘Mamba' and ‘Mambacita' as they reportedly filed for a trademark, per the U.S. Patent and Trademark office via TMZ.

According to Business Insider, Bryant first coined the nickname ‘The Black Mamba' in order to make a separation between his professional and personal life. The moniker reportedly signified an ‘alter-ego' which Bryant used in order to get through tough times during the early stages of his playing career.

Not long after, his daughter Gianna, who was also into basketball, eventually adopted the nickname ‘Mambacita', serving as the counterpart of ‘Mamba'.

On March 10, a lawyer representing Kobe Bryant LLC filed the application. The trademark will reportedly be used on several apparel pieces including shirts, skirts, pants, shorts, bottoms, socks, dresses, jackets, and hoodies, among others.

It will also include workout gear namely sweatbands, armbands, and footwear. However, it remains uncertain if posthumous Mamba and Mambacita sneakers are already on the drawing board as of the moment.

On another note, the attempt to secure the trademark for the nicknames of Kobe and Gianna Bryant may just be a bid to prevent other people from using it. It can be similar to how Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady sought to lock up the ‘Tom Terrific' trademark which was eventually sacked back in 2019.

It wasn't the first trademark attempt of the Bryant family since Kobe and Gianna's death back in late January of 2020. They also filed for other trademarks that were in reference to them such as ‘Mamba Sports Academy,' ‘Mambacita,' ‘Lady Mambas,' and ‘Lil Mambas'.

Hopefully, the Bryant family's application for the trademark will be granted in order to further preserve Kobe and Gianna's legacy in their memory moving forward. Lakers fans will surely appreciate anything that helps to remember him.
