Throughout his professional basketball career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Byrant has won almost all awards the NBA has to offer. From All-Star nods, MVP Awards, to his five championships, he has won it all in a career that lasted 20 years long. He may add another award to his trophy cabinet soon if things pan out well for him, but this time it’s not something from the NBA.

The future Hall of Famer could become an Oscar winner, as he was shortlisted recently for his work on “Dear Basketball,” which is a short film he made that depicted the ups and downs of his illustrious career. Although there will still be a screening to finalize the final five nominees, according to Matthew Moreno of Lakers Nation, it’s already a huge honor for Bryant to be considered for the award.

A screening committee pared down a group of 63 animated short films to announce 10 nominees that advanced in the voting process for the 90th annual Academy Awards. Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant was nominated for an Oscar for his work on “Dear Basketball.”

Members of the short films and feature animation branch will next hold screenings, and will then select five nominees from the Oscar shortlist.

The short film was originally a poem Bryant published on The Players’ Tribune back in 2015, to inspire the players of today to follow his footsteps, and help bring out the best in them. It was brought to life by veteran animation director Glen Keane and set to the music of legendary composer John Williams.

It remains to be seen if Bryant will be part of the final list of nominees. Should that happen, it could motivate the Los Angeles Lakers great to make more poems in the future and may mark the start of a budding career for him as a filmmaker as well.
