Darren Collison is considering a February return to the NBA and the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers are emerging as his two preferred destinations.

The Lakers are looking to improve their backup point guard position as they look towards improving their roster, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN. One person associated with the Lakers is hoping Collison signs with the Purple and Gold instead of the Clippers, per Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report:

“He would be unbelievable,” said one person associated with the team.

Collison retired from the NBA before the 2019-20 season started. He played for the Indiana Pacers last season. With the Pacers in 2018-19, Collison averaged 11.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 6.0 assists in 76 games. He shot 46.7 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from beyond the arc and 83.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Collison, who played his college ball at UCLA, has career NBA averages of 12.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists in 708 games with the New Orleans Hornets, Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, Clippers and Sacramento Kings.

The Lakers have the best record in the Western Conference. They are 27-7. However, Rajon Rondo hasn't been that good of a backup to LeBron James this season. He doesn't space the floor well since he's a below average shooter and the Lakers are actually better offensively when Rondo is on the bench.

The Lakers’ offensive rating drops by 4.1 points when Rondo is on the floor, per Basketball Reference.
