The Detroit Lions are closing in on a deal with cornerback Justin Coleman, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The contract would make Coleman the highest-paid nickelback in the NFL.

Coleman spent the 2018 campaign with the Seattle Seahawks, playing in all 16 games and registering 55 tackles, a half of a sack, an interception, a forced fumble, a couple of fumble recoveries, 10 passes defended, and a defensive touchdown.

The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Tennessee, went undrafted but eventually landed with the New England Patriots in 2015.

He appeared in 10 contests for the Patriots during his rookie campaign, finishing with 21 tackles, a fumble recovery, and five passes defended. Then, the following year, Coleman participated in 10 games but logged just eight tackles.

The Brunswick, Ga. native was then traded to the Seahawks in September 2017 and went on to play in 16 games that season, totaling 35 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a couple of interceptions, nine passes defended, and a pair of defensive touchdowns.

The Lions are coming off of a season in which they won just six games and missed the playoffs.

Success has been hard to come by for Detroit in recent years, as the Lions have only made three postseason appearances since 2000 and have not won a playoff game since the 1991-92 campaign when they made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game.

Detroit actually went 11 seasons without making a playoff appearance between 2000 and 2010, finally snapping its skid when it won 10 games and earned a Wild Card berth in 2011.
