The Detroit Lions are hoping to break out of the rut that their franchise has been in for decades. At the least, Darrell Bevell believes that one of the position rooms has been improved for 2019.

In an article on the Lions official site by Tim Twentyman, the Lions offensive coordinator says the tight end room has been a “big upgrade” this offseason. Of course, earlier this offseason, the Lions hired Bevell to replace Jim Bob Cooter as the offensive coordinator.

Bevell hopes the improvements at the tight end position allows him to do more within his offense. Here's the offensive coordinator speaking about the additions himself:

“I think that whole room has been a big upgrade in all ways,” he said. “From Jesse to T.J. to Logan… it’s a great group for us to work with to kind of sift through those guys and find out what they’re doing well.

“But that’s a talented group. We’re really excited about all of those guys.”

“I think it’s going to give us the ability to do a lot of things,” Bevell said. “We’ll still use our three wideouts as well. All the personnel groups, I think you’ll be able to see a lot of those. They (the tight ends) give us a lot of flexibility.”

During the 2019 NFL Draft, the Lions used their first-round selection on T.J. Hockenson. Hockenson joins Jesse James and Logan Thomas in Detroit. This group could allow the Lions to use more two tight end sets on offense.

The Lions need to find something to help Matthew Stafford return to his once-dominant form. Matt Patricia would love to see his new team use his former team's (New England Patriots) strategy of utilizing two tight ends in 2019.
