The Detroit Lions came up short of pulling off an upset against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4. Fortunately, it appears tight end T.J. Hockenson was able to avoid serious injury.

Hockenson landed in concussion protocol after landing on his head and shoulder following an attempted hurdle against the Chiefs. According to Jeff Risdon of the Lions Wire, head coach Matt Patricia is optimistic that he will not be out for very long:

“In protocol as far that’s concerned, but really just normal,” Patricia stated. “Today’s fine and everything like that, but he’ll be in that – nope just the protocol right now.”

This is certainly an encouraging update for the Lions. The injury Hockenson suffered initially appeared to be a devastating one considering he was unable to get up and had to be carted off the field. Patricia's comments indicate that he will be back sooner rather than later.

The timing of the injury could not have worked out any better for Hockenson with Detroit heading into their bye week. This will allow him some extra time to clear the concussion protocol and make his return in a crucial NFC North matchup with the Green Bay Packers in Week 6.

The Lions made quite the investment when they took Hockenson with the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The rookie has done a solid job of justifying his status by hauling in 11 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Patricia's comments indicate that he should be available for the trip to Green Bay next week.
