The Detroit Lions landed one of the best defensive players on the free-agent market this offseason, signing defensive lineman Trey Flowers to a five-year, $90 million contract back in March.

While Flowers was very productive during his time with the New England Patriots, one thing he was not known for was being vocal.

Of course, that may have had something to do with the fact that he was playing on a Patriots team full of veteran leadership in the form of guys like Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, Devin McCourty and head coach Bill Belichick, but now, he will be joining a Lions club that could use some guidance from a Super Bowl champion.

As a result, Flowers is trying to change his approach heading into 2019:

“I wouldn’t say it’s a challenge, but it’s understood and expected obviously,” said Flowers, according to Carlos Monarrez of The Detroit Free Press. “I might have to step outside my comfort level a little bit just to get to know guys and guys get to know me. But it is what it is. Anytime you come to a new environment that’s expected. You’ve got to branch out, get to know guys, talk and fellowship with guys. … I guess I’d rather be quiet or whatever, but I don’t mind talking.”

The 25-year-old is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played 15 games and registered 57 tackles, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.

Flowers, who played his collegiate football at the University of Arkansas, was originally selected by New England in the fourth round (101st pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.
