The continuous improvement of the rebuilding Los Angeles Chargers has been evident as they previously completed a respectable 2021 campaign. However, they still fell short of their goal to make it to the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

After not securing a last-gasp bid for the postseason, the team's front office will surely work in order to ensure that they get over the hump as soon as possible. Fortunately for the Chargers, they have room to be aggressive as they have around $68.4 million in cap space for 2022, per Over The Cap. However, they should still be wise in the roster moves that they will make and continue to prioritize sustainability, especially in key positions.

With that said, several decisions are expected to be made as they try to form a more competitive roster for the 2022 season. Let's take a look at a player who could be in danger to be cut from the team in the upcoming offseason.

1 surprise cut for the Chargers in the offseason

Over the past couple of years, the Chargers have always been demanded by many to put up a solid offensive line to protect their quarterback in the pocket. The clamor further intensified when Justin Herbert emerged to be their franchise QB after having a stellar rookie season back in 2020.

The team's brass tried to address the holes by acquiring two linemen from the Green Bay Packers with the likes of Corey Linsley and Bryan Bulaga. The former turned out to be a perfect acquisition at the center position for the Chargers. However, the latter failed to see consistent action on the field as he was marred by a handful of injuries in recent memory.

In 2020, Bulaga signed a three-year, $30 million contract but went on to miss six games due to a back injury. Things got worse in 2021 as he only managed to appear in their Week 1 contest and spent the rest of their campaign in the injured reserve due to back and groin injuries.

Currently, the 32-year-old is set to play the final year of his current deal though he will be coming in with a $14.1 million cap number. Given that his contract is not guaranteed as well as having an unpaid roster bonus, the Chargers will have to beat the March 20 deadline if they want to save around $10.8 million with $3.3 million in dead money.

Without a doubt, Bulaga can perform well whenever he's in the pink of health, given his championship experience of playing for the Packers for nine years. However, his inability to stay on the field for the majority of the past seasons has become a growing liability on the team's pockets.

If the Chargers decide to move on from the veteran in the near future then they can opt to use the cleared money to acquire reliable free agents in the offseason. Names like Trent Brown, Germain Ifedi, and Morgan Moses are all intriguing options for the team at the right tackle position.

They can also opt to select a young prospect using their 17th overall pick in the first round of the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft. Surely enough, investing to fill in a valuable position that can protect their franchise QB should be a no-brainer for the Chargers at this stage of their rebuilding efforts.

Given the situation, it seems like Bryan Bulaga is not the answer that the team is looking for in the trenches today, especially considering the history of his health over the past couple of years.
