Only two games into their preseason schedule, the Orlando Magic already suffered a blow to their hopes of fielding in the best possible lineup once the regular season starts. During their practice session on Wednesday, Adreian Payne broke his hand and will be out indefinitely, according to the team’s official release on Magic.com.

“During today’s practice, Orlando Magic forward Adreian Payne suffered a fractured fourth metacarpal in his left hand, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced. His return to play will depend on how the injury heals and how he responds to treatment.”

The 26-year-old Michigan State product signed a two-way deal with the Magic back in August, where he received a chance to compete for a roster spot, but is also guaranteed to see action for their G-League affiliate, the Lakeland Magic. He is three-year NBA veteran who saw action for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season, where he averaged 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in 18 games.

With the status of his return still unclear, it can be expected that Adreian Payne won’t be making the final cut, and will need to make his way up to the NBA through the G-League. If there’s any silver lining to his injury, he is already familiar with the competition there, as he had stints in Fort Wayne, Austin, and Eerie.
