The Charlotte Hornets during the 2017 NBA Draft last Thursday night saw former Kentucky guard Malik Monk fall into their laps at the 11th overall pick.

However, it appears that the Hornets will have to wait a little bit longer to see the rookie him play as it was announced that Monk will miss the next two to four weeks due to an ankle injury that he suffered during the pre-draft workout process that will likely force him to miss the Summer League next month.

The Charlotte Hornets announced today that guard Malik Monk will miss the Hornets Summer League Training Camp in Charlotte and is doubtful to participate in the team’s games at the Mountain Dew Orlando Pro Summer League with a sprained left ankle suffered during the draft workout process.  Monk’s rehab is expected to last two to four weeks and he is expected to be ready to participate in training camp prior to the start of the regular season.

It is a minor setback for Monk as he won't have the opportunity to compete against other young talent ahead of training camp and preseason. Summer League is essentially a chance for rookies to get their feet under them a bit before the real team activities begin.

Monk was one of the more intriguing offensive talents in this year's draft class coming off a strong freshman campaign at Kentucky where he ranked second among NCAA freshman in scoring with 19.8 points per game. He finished in double figures 36 times including notching 20 or more points 19 times with four 30-point outings.

Monk also led the SEC in points scored (754), three-pointers made (104) and three-point percentage (.39.7) earning him the conference honors for player of the year and freshman of the year.

This may be unfortunate news for the short-term future, it should not create any real cause for concern for Monk heading into his rookie campaign.
