Another day, another disappointing performance from Manchester United. Ralf Rangnick’s side is now officially out of the running for a Champions League spot after a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton on Saturday on the South Coast. Europa looks to be the reality for the Red Devils, but they’ve now set an unwanted record that no one at Old Trafford will be proud of.

Via OptaJoe:

Shambolic. Manchester United can finish with 61 points at best and the club has never, ever ended in a campaign with fewer points. As noted, in 2013/14, they had 64 points, but that was the worst to date. No one expected the Red Devils to be this bad, especially after reuniting with Cristiano Ronaldo last summer. To be frank, if it wasn’t for his 18 Premier League goals, the side would probably be in a much worse position.

Major changes are definitely coming this summer, with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag set to take over as manager as Rangnick moves into a front-office role. Paul Pogba is expected to leave as well, while the future of Cristiano is certainly up in the air. Will he settle for Europa League football? It feels unlikely.

Manchester United supporters have all the reason to be embarrassed about how the 2021-22 campaign has unfolded. But, hopefully, better times are ahead for one of the biggest clubs on the globe. Their last fixture of the season is next Sunday at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.
