The Ottawa Senators were in advanced talks with the Buffalo Sabres over a Matt Murray deal. However, he has them on his no-trade list, which means that's totally out of the question at this point. Now, the Toronto Maple Leafs, who need help in between posts, are “in the mix” for Murray, who is reportedly keen on playing for the Leafs.

Via Bruce Garrioch:

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the mix on Matt Murray and he would agree to a move there. Arizona and Chicago both looking for goalies.

As noted by Garrioch, Arizona, and Chicago also have Murray on their radar. Ottawa currently has three goalies on their roster and is looking to offload Murray after his struggles. The Maple Leafs could offer a fresh start for the 28-year-old, who previously won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 17′ with the Pittsburgh Penguins and made the All-Rookie Team in 2017.

Since joining the Sens in 2020, Murray has barely played. He's featured in just 47 games, allowing an average of 3.38 goals and posting a .899 save percentage. It's very clear he needs a change of scenery.

There is no guarantee he finds his form with the Maple Leafs but Murray was once a very good goaltender in this league. Going to a contender and getting the opportunity to compete for a starting spot could potentially bring out the best in him.

With Anton Forsberg locking up the first-string spot in Ottawa, it's best for Matt Murray to leave. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up.
