Seattle Mariners rookie Julio Rodriguez opened up the 2022 MLB Home Run Derby. Naturally, being a 21-year-old first-year player, many would expect Rodriguez to be showing his nerves. Well, if he was nervous, no one would have ever known it. The Mariners budding star clubbed 32 homers in the first round, equaling this wild feat by two-time champion and fellow Home Run Derby participant Pete Alonso, per Sarah Langs on Twitter.

Per Langs, Julio Rodriguez' 32 Derby bombs are the second-most ever in a first round, behind New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso, who drilled 35 last year. Seeing as 2021 was Alonso's second straight Home Run Derby win, the Mariners rookie is in pretty good company.

Of course, being in a field with talented sluggers like Alonso, Ronald Acuna Jr., Juan Soto and Kyle Schwarber will lead to someone like Rodriguez being overshadowed. But maybe he shouldn't be.

Mariners teammate Ty France knows all about the home run capabilities of Rodriguez, though. Here's what France had to say, per Senior MLB writer Ryan Fagan.

“Those are obviously people who haven't watched Julio Rodríguez take batting practice.”

Evidently, a lot of people had never seen Rodriguez take batting practice. After the absolute show he put on At Dodger Stadium on Monday night, it's safe to say that the Mariners former top prospect won't be flying under the radar anymore.

Who will Rodriguez have to face in the next round? Yes, you guessed it, Pete Alonso. After equaling his record, Rodriguez will now have to try to eliminate him in the Home Run Derby.

Get your popcorn ready, baseball fans.
