Mario Kart 8 first came out for the Wii U back in 2014. In 2017, the Nintendo Switch officially launched and fans were expecting Mario Kart 9. Sadly, all we got was an upgraded version of the Wii U game in the form of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Finally, after nearly a decade long of waiting, we might finally get the long-awaited sequel.

During an interview with Gameindustry.biz, Kantan Games consultant Dr. Serkan Toto gave some insights regarding Mario Kart 9. According to Toto, the ninth iteration of the game is currently in development and there’ll be a new (unspecified) twist added into the game. He also mentioned that a teaser trailer for Mario Kart 9 could possibly come out this 2022.

All these claims by Dr. Serkan Toto line up perfectly since the Nintendo Switch is celebrating five years this 2022. Mario Kart 9 could possibly be one of those games that come out during the anniversary celebration. However, we have to consider that Nintendo doesn’t usually release multiple Mario Kart games on one console system. Even so, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe technically isn’t a new Mario Kart game. This means Mario Kart 9 launching on the Switch is also very likely to happen.

Whatever the case may be, we’ll just have to wait for an official announcement from Nintendo. It’ll be exciting to see what new features Nintendo has in store for the new Mario Kart game. We just wish that the new twist Toto was saying doesn't refer to NFTs.
