The Marquette Golden Eagles are in the market for a new head coach, with Stadium's Jeff Goodman reporting the firing of Steve Wojciechowski.

Marquette released a statement:

A Coach K disciple, Wojciechowski not only played at Duke (1994-98), but after a year playing basketball overseas, he returned to the program and stayed there from 1999-2014. He was promoted to Associate Coach in 2008. He left to take over Marquette's program after the 2014 season.

Marquette is coming off a very underachieving year, going 13-14 and bowing out in their first game of the Big East Tournament after getting blown out by eventual conference tournament champion Georgetown. They never could get it going during this unique season amid the pandemic, finishing ninth in the Big East.

Wojciechowski may have to take the Richard Pitino route, going from a power conference school to a smaller conference school. Pitino was recently let go by Minnesota but landed at New Mexico shortly after as the head coach of the Lobos. Wojciechowski could take a similar path if he wants to hop right back into the coaching ranks.

In seven years at Marquette, the Golden Eagles compiled a record of 128-95 under Wojciechowski. But the lack of tournament success and tournament appearances was a glaring blemish on the resume. In seven years, Marquette only made the NCAA Tournament twice, in 2016 and again in 2018. They went 0-2 in those tournament games. As a reference point, Marquette's previous coach Buzz Williams took Marquette to five tournaments in six years, including two Sweet Sixteen appearances and an Elite Eight berth.

The job itself should draw plenty of interest as Marquette can still be a really solid program, and playing in the Big East helps its cause as well to lure in some eyeballs.
