The Dallas Mavericks were one of only four NBA teams last season to take more than 3,000 three-point shots – and they expect to do more of the same in 2019-20. At least judging from a training camp regimen that the Mavs have been using.

On the Mavs training facility, there are blue markers all over the floor – two extra lines several feet away farther from the regular three-point arc and then several square box outlines all over the court that also extend past downtown. When pressed by Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News for the purposes of these markers, head coach Rick Carlisle was quite coy.

“I'm not going to talk about our reasons for doing that kind of stuff. It's private. You guys can take pictures of them if you want to; there's pictures of everybody's practices. But it doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out why they're there. It's been helpful.”

With nearly the entire roster capable of knocking down outside shots (right down to the big men except for newcomer Boban Marjanovic), the Mavs could certainly deploy lineups predicated on just stretching the floor. Unlike last year when the team's percentage was the third-worst, they expect that to improve after signing one of the top outside shooters in the league in Seth Curry and also having a healthy Kristaps Porzingis back who each shot 45-percent and 39.5-percent respectively from distance their recent seasons.

One thing is for certain, more teams are starting to fully embrace the league's direction towards a long-range offensive model – and the Mavs are just one of the latest to truly get with the program.
