Before acquiring Kristaps Porzingis from the New York Knicks, the Dallas Mavericks reportedly looked into an Aaron Gordon trade with the Orlando Magic, according to Zach Lowe of ESPN.

The Mavs are trying to surround Luka Doncic with as much talent as possible. Gordon is a high-flyer who has vastly improved his jump shot. Porzingis has star potential, but he's going to be out for the season recovering from an ACL tear and it's unclear how he is going to look next season.

However, Dallas felt comfortable making the deal anyway. The Mavs sent New York center DeAndre Jordan, small forward Wesley Matthews, point guard Dennis Smith Jr., a 2021 first-round pick, and a 2023 first-round pick for Porzingis.

Dallas investigated Gordon's availability before the Porzingis deal, sources have said.

Aaron Gordon signed a four-year, $80 million deal with the Magic last season. It's unknown if Orlando was looking to move Gordon or if the Mavs just called to check in with the trade deadline coming up.

Entering Friday, Gordon was averaging 15.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game for the Magic while shooting 45.2 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from beyond the arc and 72.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Porzingis put up 22.7 points per game last season for the Knicks before tearing his ACL. Acquiring Gordon would have been great for the Mavs for this season, but getting Porzingis might be better for the long haul assuming he makes a full recovery.
