The Los Angeles Dodgers will host the Philadelphia Phillies for the first of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium. It’s time to continue our MLB odds series and make a Phillies-Dodgers prediction and pick.

These clubs have been red-hot lately and will certainly provide plenty of fireworks in this National League series. Philadelphia is riding a four-game winning streak and the Dodgers have won five of their last six games to date. Both teams are looking to gain ground in their respective divisions and this series will go a long way in doing so.

Here’s how sportsbooks have set the opening Phillies-Dodgers odds.

MLB Odds: Phillies-Dodgers Odds

Philadelphia Phillies +1.5 (-130)

Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 (+110)

Over 9 Runs (-130)

Under 9 Runs (+110)

Why The Phillies Could Cover The Spread

The Philadelphia Phillies finally seem to be getting it together as they're riding a four-game winning streak into this series. The Phillies are now 32-31 on the season, which puts them in second place in the National League East division behind the Mets. Philadelphia is 6-1 in their last seven games and currently clicking on all cylinders.

The Phillies offense struggled out of the gate but has looked a lot better as of late. They scored 15 runs during their two-game sweep of the Yankees over the weekend. Philadelphia is now averaging 4.3 runs on 7.9 hits per game, which is good for 15th and ninth in the majors. The one notable flaw for this club however has been their play on the road. The Phillies are currently 11-19 away from home, which will definitely need to improve if this team wants to play in October.

The Phillies will turn to right-hander Spencer Howard for the series opener. Howard is coming off of the shortest outing of his career against the Nationals. The right-hander allowed one unearned run, two walks, and one hit in 2.1 innings of work. The 24-year-old currently has a 2.89 ERA in 9.1 innings of work as a starter this season.

Why The Dodgers Could Cover The Spread

The Los Angeles Dodgers are back to dominating the league after a brief slump last month. The defending champs have won five of their last six games to date and have scored a ton of runs lately. The Dodgers are 8-2 in their last 10 home games against the Phillies as well. They've outscored Philadelphia by more than two runs per game during that stretch.

Los Angeles is averaging 5.2 runs on 8.2 hits per game, which is good for second and seventh in the league, respectively. Los Angeles leads the bigs in walks per game and does a great job of getting on base and hitting the long ball regularly. They are 21-11 and score over 5.4 runs per game at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers are 39-25 straight up as the favorite this season.

Los Angeles will turn to right-hander Tony Gonsolin for the series opener. Gonsolin will be making just his second start of the season. His first start didn't go as planned as the right-hander failed to make it out of the second inning against the Pirates after issuing five walks and one earned run in 1.2 innings of work. Gonsolin will certainly look to bounce back with a quality outing against the Phillies.

Final Phillies-Dodgers Prediction & Pick

This series will be a lot of fun to watch as both teams are red-hot at the plate. Although it's clear that the Dodgers are the better team, it's the Phillies that have been better offensively of late. Philadelphia will also have the luxury of facing a guy that just walked five batters and recorded just five outs in his first start of the season. If that is any indicator, the Phillies should be in for a field day. Spencer Howard has been great as a starter for Philadelphia and if he is able to register a quality start for his club, the Phillies should have no problem covering this spread.

FINAL PICK: Philadelphia Phillies +1.5 (-130)
