Texas Tech Red Raiders shooting guard Jarrett Culver declared for the NBA draft on Thursday. Video of the announcement his announcement is below, courtesy of the Associated Press' Carlos Silva, Jr.

Culver was undecided about turning pro in the wake of the Red Raiders' 85-77 loss to the Virginia Cavaliers in the national title game on April 9. Many draft experts project Culver as a top-10 prospect, with a legitimate chance to be selected among the first five pick come June 20th.

Culver averaged 18.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game last season, major improvements over his promising, if understated, freshman campaign. He was named Big 12 Player of the Year, First-Team All Big 12, and a consensus Second-Team All American.

At 6-foot-6 with long arms, Culver has good size for a playmaking guard and compensates for a lack of elite athleticism with coordination and pace that makes him tough to contain with the ball in his hands. He shot just 30.4 percent from beyond the arc on a difficult diet of attempts in 2018, but profiles as an above-average shooter long-term nevertheless. What will decide Culver's ceiling more than anything, though, is if he's able to develop into a threatening shooter off the dribble. Otherwise, he's more likely to be an overqualified ancillary offensive option at the next level instead of a high-usage star.

Now that Culver has declared for the NBA Draft, Texas Tech are set to have first-round selections in consecutive years. The Philadelphia 76ers made swingman Zhaire Smith the 16th overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft.
