Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers and Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse have been named the Coaches of the Month for the first month of the NBA season.

The Clippers are the biggest surprise of the season thus far. They are 15-7 on the season, tied for first place in the tough Western Conference with the Denver Nuggets. Rivers, a veteran coach and master motivator, has done a phenomenal job leading a team that doesn't have any star power on it.

Nurse, meanwhile is in his first year as the man in charge of the Raptors after Detroit Pistons current head coach Dwane Casey was released from his head coaching duties in Toronto this summer. All Nurse has done in Casey's spot is lead Toronto to the best record in the NBA at 20-4.

This is the first Clippers team since 2011 that doesn't have Chris Paul, Blake Griffin or DeAndre Jordan on it. Coming into the season, many thought the Clippers were rebuilding and wouldn't win many games with their hodgepodge roster. Those pundits have been completely wrong, as Rivers is proving that he is much better suited to coach a team full of underdogs than a group with egos.

Nurse was Casey's top assistant the past couple of seasons and was in charge of the Raptors' offense. With his promotion and thus the emphasis on the offensive end, in addition to the acquisition of star small forward Kawhi Leonard, Toronto looks like the best team in the East. Maybe even the entire NBA.
