Richard Jefferson has quietly been making headlines off the court… or at least, most people think he is. Despite not being explicitly named, the former NBA star has been rumored to be the victim of embezzlement. This is involving a case where a former assistant of the star reportedly stole $5 million from him.

Well, for now, justice has been served for Jefferson. A press release announced that Theodore Itsvan Joseph Kritza, the alleged former personal assistant of Richard Jefferson, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison. Kritza will also pay around $5 million in restitution costs as part of his sentence.

The press release details the actions taken by Kritza during his time as Jefferson's assistant:

“In April 2005, the victim, an NBA player, hired Kritza to serve as his personal assistant, taking care of his day-to-day tasks, including paying his bills. Between 2005 and 2012, Kritza fraudulently obtained funds by forging the victim’s signature on more than two dozen documents, including business loans, credit line applications, and a power of attorney. Kritza also forged his employer’s signature to open a bank account in the victim’s name so Kritza could conceal his use of the victim’s personal funds. “

Regardless of your feelings on Jefferson as a player, I think most people will agree that this is an awful thing to happen to anyone. Placing your trust on someone and then getting double-crossed is just about the worst thing that can happen to anyone. Thankfully, Jefferson had a pretty successful NBA career, so the $5 million stolen from him didn't have a severe impact on his or his family's life.

Jefferson nowadays is one of the more popular NBA personalities, due to his hilariously blunt style of commentating on games. However, before he sat on the booth, Jefferson was one of the stars of the league, electrifying crowds with his high-flying moves. He also won one ring as part of the legendary 2016 Cavs team that came from a 3-1 series deficit in the Finals.
