Team Durant may not have ended up as winners in the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, but three of its starters in Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson did make history on Sunday night.

Over the years, the Duke University men’s basketball program of head coach Mike Krzyzewski has established itself as one of the best in the country and has produced several talented NBA players. That was never more apparent than in the All-Star Game when Irving, Tatum and Williamson started together.

It was the first time that three players from the same college started on the same All-Star team, per Elias Sports Bureau, once more proving the success of the Blue Devils program.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid was supposed to start for Team Durant, but he was ruled ineligible along with Sixers teammate Ben Simmons due to COVID-19 contact tracing. That cleared the way for Zion Williamson, who was selected in his first NBA All-Star Game as a reserve, to start alongside other former Duke players in Jayson Tatum and Kyrie Irving.

Williamson finished with 10 points in 14 minutes of play, while Tatum had 21 points, four rebounds, seven assists and four steals in 17 minutes. Irving, a former All-Star Game MVP, finished with 24 points, five rebounds, 12 assists and two steals in his seventh appearance at the annual NBA showcase.

Interestingly, the three players never played together for the Blue Devils, as they all played just one season for Duke. Irving played in 2010-2011, Tatum suited up in 2016-2017, and Williamson, the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, played for Krzyzewski in 2018-2019.
