Why Houston Can Cover The Spread

While the Rockets are overall in last place in the West with a record of 15-38, they’re 21-30-2 against the spread this year, and 14-13-1 against the spread on the road. Houston ranks 18th in average points per game (108.3) and is managing 30-22-1 in favor of the over on the season so far. The Rockets don’t have a roster that jumps off the page, but forward Christian Wood keeps Houston in games by averaging a double-double in points (17.7) and rebounds (10.3) on the year. If he can help the offense create scoring opportunities and keep it a close game, the Rockets have the chance to cover a large 9.5 point spread.

Why New Orleans Can Cover The Spread

The Pelicans just made a seven-player trade with Portland this morning to mainly acquire CJ McCollum, but Larry Nance Jr., and Tony Snell were also a part of the package. In exchange, New Orleans sent away Josh Hart, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Tomas Satoranky, Marcos Louzada Silva, a 2022 first-round pick, and two future second-round picks. Assuming that the players involved in the trade most likely won’t be playing tonight, it’ll be up to Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valanciunas to help cover a fairly large spread against one of the least productive teams in the league.

Final Rockets-Pelicans Prediction & Pick

With the Pelicans being short on talent tonight due to trades, the total seems to be a bit high. Not only are the Pelicans short-handed tonight, but they also average 105.9 points a game, three points fewer than the Rockets, and they’re still favored by 9.5 points. Maybe it's compensating for the lack of consistent defense that both teams seem to possess, but either way, the total is way too large for this matchup.

Final Rockets-Pelicans Prediction & Pick: Under 225 (-106)
