When power forward Ed Davis signed with the Brooklyn Nets in free agency last summer, he didn't think he was joining a team which was going to compete for the playoffs this season.

Davis was wrong and he's happy that he was. The Nets are 30-30 on the season entering Saturday, which is good for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

“When I signed here in July, I didn’t think this was a playoff team, honestly,” Davis told Brian Lewis of the New York Post. “But when I got here and started to see players and how good guys were — and see coach, his philosophies and his schemes — my mindset changed.

“Before the [All-Star] break, we knew what we had on the table when we got back, so a lot of us were focused on unfinished business and closing out the regular season strong, and making this push for the playoffs.”

Ed Davis signed a one-year, $4.4 million with the Nets last summer after spending the 2017-18 season with the Portland Trail Blazers. The 29-year-old is averaging 6.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season for Brooklyn while shooting 62.3 percent from the field.

The Nets haven't made the postseason since 2015. The team has a great chance this season to snap the playoff drought in Brooklyn.
