Stephen A. Smith couldn't help but laugh at the news that Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets are at an “impasse” over their contract negotiations.

Clearly Irving wanted a long-term deal with the Nets, but the team seems unwilling to commit to him after the 2021-22 disaster that saw the veteran guard sit out majority of the season due to his vaccination stance.

After Shams Charania of The Athletic reported about the Irving issue, the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks have been mentioned as potential suitors. However, Stephen A. could not believe that it ended to such situation .

“Is this First Take? You about to call it Comedy Central because I can’t stop laughing,” Smith exclaimed. “..This is a guy that missed 127 games over the last three seasons, and he thinks that he deserves a four-year extension, fully-loaded, on top of the $36.5 million he can opt-in and he’s scheduled to make for this upcoming season? I mean what nerve. What nerve, what gall. Talk about delusional. I mean, that’s this dude. That’s Kyrie Irving.”

Stephen A. Smith did acknowledge Kyrie Irving's ability as a “supermax talent,” albeit that is if and when he's on the court. His availability for the Nets remain a major concern, which is why the veteran analyst doesn't see him deserving of a max deal.

“When it comes to a lengthy contract … it's not just about your abilities. It's about your availability and your willingness to be available to capitulate and participate in the best interest of TEAM,” Stephen A. added.

For what it's worth, Stephen A. is probably not alone with that sentiment. Charles Barkley also didn't see the Nets and Irving reaching an agreement when it comes to his contract after what happened, suggesting that Kyrie better pick up his option and play in 2022-23 to earn his money.

It remains to be seen what will happen with the Nets, but things are certainly not looking good.
