Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving is reportedly prepared to sign with the Brooklyn Nets as soon as he becomes a free agent in July.

According to Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald, multiple sources have indicated that Irving is already set to sign with Brooklyn. Per the report, the Nets were said to be operating with the belief that Kyrie wants to join them.

According to a source with ties to Roc Nation, the organization expected to become Irving’s new representative, the All-Star point guard is prepared to sign with the Brooklyn Nets when he becomes a free agent next month. A separate league source told the Herald that his team (not the Celtics) has received the same information and is operating under the belief that Irving wants to join the Nets.

Irving was previously favored to sign with the New York Knicks per BetOnline.ag, but those odds have since been taken down.

Irving made it clear that he will not opt into his 2019-20 option with the Celtics thereby making him a free agent. Interestingly, Irving also left his longtime agent Jeff Wechsler to partner with Roc Nation Sports — conveniently, the president of ROC Nation is Michael Yormark, the brother of Nets CEO Brett Yormark.

Meanwhile, the Nets dealt their 2019 first-round pick in addition to shooting guard Allen Crabbe to the Atlanta Hawks in order to open up a second max salary slot, with the intent of pursuing Irving.

The Nets exceeded expectations this season, so it's no wonder why Irving would want to sign with them. The opportunity to lead a young team with a winning culture should also be an alluring prospect for Kyrie — whose time with the Celtics has been marred with controversy and questions about his leadership.
