Five weeks are now in the books for the 2021 NFL season. Favorites are emerging for the league’s coveted Most Valuable Player award. Per the usual, quarterbacks sit atop the unofficial MVP frontrunner list. Before Week 6 kicks off, let’s rank the top five candidates for NFL MVP.

Top 5 NFL MVP Candidates Through Week 5

5. Lamar Jackson, QB, Baltimore Ravens

The 2019 NFL MVP, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson showcased his greatness in a come-from-behind victory on Monday Night Football. Jackson erased the largest deficit of his career (19 points) to beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-25 in overtime.

Jackson set a Ravens franchise record with 442 passing yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 62 yards on 14 carries, earning the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

It marked the second time this season Jackson and the Ravens (4-1) stormed back from a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit to win, having done so against the defending AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2.

For the season, Jackson has accumulated 1,860 combined yards—1,519 passing and 341 rushing. Jackson’s combined yardage is more than 18 other NFL teams have totaled this season.

4. Justin Herbert, QB, Los Angeles Chargers

The reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Justin Herbert has shown no glimpses of the so-called sophomore slump. In Week 5, Herbert erupted for 398 yards passing and four touchdowns in a 47-42 shootout victory over the Cleveland Browns. His stellar showing came against a Cleveland defense which had held the Minnesota Vikings to only seven points the week prior.

Herbert spearheaded the Chargers to 26 fourth-quarter points versus the Browns. He has the Chargers atop the AFC West with a 4-1 mark, having already defeating the division-rival Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

For the year, Herbert has completed 67.1 percent of his passes and tossed 13 touchdowns against three interceptions.

3. Tom Brady, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Seven-time Super Bowl champion and three-time NFL MVP Tom Brady has continued to carve up opposing defenses. He leads the league in passing yards (1,767) and completions (149).

Brady, the most decorated player in league history, is still managing to achieve personal bests. The 44-year-old produced his first game with 400-plus yards passing and five touchdowns in a 45-17 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 5. As a result, the ageless wonder earned the NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Brady has guided the defending Super Bowl champion Bucs to a 4-1 record, the top mark in the NFC South.

2. Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills (4-1) are firing on all cylinders and Josh Allen is the biggest reason why. In a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship, Allen and the visiting Bills crushed the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs 38-20 in Week 5.

Allen threw for 315 yards with three touchdowns, while rushing for 59 yards and another score. He eclipsed 300 yards passing on just 15 completions, displaying his deep-threat ability.

After posting a four-touchdown performance on Sunday Night Football, Allen now has registered 14 total touchdowns (12 passing, 2 rushing) on the year.

1. Kyler Murray, QB, Arizona Cardinals

Kyle Murray has led the Arizona Cardinals—the only undefeated team across the NFL—to a 5-0 start. It’s the first time the Cardinals have won the first five games of a season since 1974, when the franchise was based in St. Louis.

Murray leads the NFL in completion rate (75.2%). He is tied for second among all QBs in yards per attempt (9.2) and holds the fourth-highest passer rating with a 113.0 mark.

The dual-threat QB has 10 passing scores and three TDs via the ground.  Difficult to tackle and playing behind an improved offensive line, Murray has been sacked just five times all season.

According to Odds Shark, Murray’s MVP odds sit at +500, trailing only Josh Allen (+450).
