The NFL season is fast approaching. But while teams are already slated to start training camp in late July, the effects of the pandemic are still weighing down heavily on the league.

With that, the NFL has asked every team to craft their own Infectious Disease Emergency Response (IDER) plan that sets strict protocols for containing any potential outbreak.

ESPN reports that a memo on this was sent forth by the NFL to all teams.

In this detailed plan, the league requires every team to divide their organization into “tiers” that grant access to team facilities only to specified people.

Each organization must determine whether employees fall in Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3.

The final list is to be submitted to the league office a week before the mandatory report date for the 2020 NFL season. This has left everyone scrambling to determine the final designations for their personnel.

The league-wide memo lists the following breakdown for each tier:

“Tier 1 will consist of players, coaches, trainers, physicians and necessary personnel who must have direct access to the players.

Tier 2 will consist of general managers, football operations employees, other assistant coaches, video personnel, security and other essential personnel who may need to be in close proximity to the players and other Tier 1 individuals who may need to access restricted areas. Only individuals assigned to Tiers 1 and 2 will be permitted access to restricted areas, and there will be limits on the number of individuals from each team that can be assigned Tier 1 and Tier 2 access at any given time.

Tier 3 will consist of certain operational personnel, in-house media and broadcast personnel, field manager, transportation providers and individuals who perform essential facility, stadium or event services but do not require close contact with Tier 1 individuals. Team and other personnel who work exclusively in areas of team facilities that are or will be completely cordoned off from the rest of the facility do not need to be credentialed in one of the three access tiers.”

Aside from the access restrictions, the NFL also expects strict safety protocols to be enforced.

All personnel that have access to sensitive areas must undergo daily testing. Social distancing and sanitation guidelines were also laid out, with every employee required to wear masks at all times unless absolutely necessary.

Welcome to your new normal, NFL.
