Yannick Ngakoue's time with the Jacksonville Jaguars may or may not be over soon. The deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign a long-term contract extension is on Wednesday.

If the two sides don’t come to terms with an extension by then, Ngakoue will have to play out the 2020 season under the franchise tag number of $17.8 million, whether that’s with the Jaguars or another team.

NFL insider Adam Schefter posted more details regarding the defensive end's situation on Twitter:

The dispute between Yannick Ngakoue and the Jacksonville franchise has been ongoing for nearly 10 months. The relationship between the two parties soured when the Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tom Coughlin abruptly broke off negotiations with the player and his agent, Ari Nissim.

Ngakoue also turned down a $19 million offer but eventually went on to play last season after an 11-day training camp holdout for $2.025 million.

The former Maryland Terrapin has made it known to the Jaguars' front office that he desires to be traded. However, there was no significant interest to acquire his services from the teams ever since.

The situation leaves Yannick Ngakoue with two choices. He can have a change of heart and continue to play for the Jaguars or he could sit out the 2020 season and leave $18 million on the table.

If Ngakoue chose to sit out, he would join a notable group consisting of Le'Veon Bell (2018), defensive tackles Sean Gilbert (1997), and Dan Williams (1998). They were the players who sat out a year because they didn’t sign their tag by the season opener, according to the ESPN Stats & Information research.

The 25-year old veteran contributed 36 solo tackles, 8 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles in 16 games played for the Jaguars last season.

The deadline is fast approaching for the two sides to reach a deal and it looks like Ngakoue's contract situation won't be over soon.
