Why the Canucks Could Cover the Spread

The NHL trade deadline is over and despite all the rumors, JT Miller is still with the Canucks even though Vancouver is virtually out of playoff contention. With Miller still in Canucks thread, the team will look to stop the bleeding. Vancouver has lost all its last three games and is only 1-3-2 over its last six games (all at home), including last Sunday’s 3-2 overtime loss at home to the Buffalo Sabres to finish a forgettable seven-game (2-3-2home stand. Perhaps playing in a different atmosphere would be a cure to the Canucks’ malaise. The last time they were away, the Canucks carved out a 6-4 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Canucks have already twice lost to Colorado this season, but both those games were with a different head coach.

Vancouver has looked and played like a better team since Bruce Boudreau took over the head-coaching duties for the team in December. And while they have floundered defensively of late, the Canucks remain to have a stout defense in the NHL. Despite their mediocre goal-production and middling possession numbers, the Canucks are a decent 13th in terms of PDO (100.1) this season, largely because of a 5-on-5 .933 SV%  – second overall. Thatcher Demko is still Vancouver’s best bet in front of the net even after some disappointing starts from the 26-year-old netminder. On the season, Demko is 27-19-4 with a 2.68 GAA and .916 SV%. Perhaps two days of full rest will do the trick for the Canucks, who are 4-0 in their last four games following that long of a break.

Why the Avalanche Could Cover the Spread

There’s no stopping the Avalanche at the moment. They are heading into their third date with a team that, as mentioned earlier, Colorado has already walloped twice this season. The Avs, who are coming off a 3-2 overtime win at home against the Edmonton Oilers, defeated Vancouver at home on Nov. 11, 7-1, and then again on Nov. 17 on the road, 4-2. Those pair of games is a microcosm of the difference of these teams this season offense-wise. There’s a huge disparity between Colorado and Vancouver – in favor of the Avs – when it comes to goal production. While the Cancucks are only 21st in the league with 2.81 goals for per game, Colorado is near the top, as it is second overall with 3.83 goals for per contest.

The scoring hasn’t changed a lot since for Colorado, which has found the back of the net at least three times in six of its last seven games – and that’s with a silent power-play attack that mustered only four goals in that stretch. In fact, the Avs have gone 0/18 in power plays in their last five games. That drought could be over as soon as tonight, though. For one, the Canucks have one of the worst – if not the worst – penalty kill in the NHL; Vancouver is only snuffing out opposing power-play attacks 71.35 percent of the time. Outside of the Montreal Canadiens, the Canucks have allowed the most power-play goals this season with 51. The last time the Canucks and Avs met, Colorado struck gold on the power play three times in five opportunities. Conversely, the Avalanche, 45-8 in their last 53 games as the home team, are fifth with a 24.77 PP% and the NHL’s leader this season in power-play goals with 54.

Final Canucks-Avalanche Prediction & Pick

The return for even an Avs puck line cover isn’t too ideal, but despite playing without Gabriel Landeskog, Colorado continues to look close to unstoppable. Against the Canucks, the Avs will continue to have their way. Taking the Avs here to win by at least two goals.

Final Canucks-Avalanche Pick: Avalanche -1.5 (-102)
